Children, parents and bugs with attitude … 2009 marks the release of the much-anticipated, most disgusting picture book ever written about a bunch of houseflies.

Swat! was inspired by the impact of humans on our environment – not only in terms of the planet as a wonderful gigantic ecosystem, but on smaller creatures that co-exist with us in our neigbourhoods, right under our very noses … and the revolting toenails of Elizabeth’s tall friend.

Houseflies are attracted to human spaces because of the mountains of rubbish that humans create. The more rubbish, the more houseflies (or “germs with wings” as they are generally known).

Next time you peer out of your bedroom window or between the blades of grass in your garden, look out for the little creatures. No matter how big or small, every living thing plays a part in the environment’s daily routine. Imagine if we all worked together to look after it …
